Janelle Monae feat. Big Boi-"Tightrope"

Wow. A song and a video.

But nah for real, this is dope. Actually got to see it last week when Big Boi showed it to me at Stankonia (reason why I was over there coming soon).

Rare Footage: UGK Performing in San Antonio (1994)

Man...I stumbled across this footage over at what is becoming one of my favorite blog, Trill Connection, where you will find a wealth of information on the legendary UGK. At first I thought it was just this video, but then I found THREE more of Pimp and Bun running through their catalog...well, not exactly, because at this time they only had two albums out. This video was recorded in 1994 meaning that it was probably right after Super Tight came out. Anyways, skip to the 3:45 mark to go to UGK's set. The rest of these videos are nothing but them two doing their songs.

Man videos like this truly show the essence of this Southern Hip Hop shit. Look at how small the club is. Nobody popping bottles and begging for attention and ALL the damn lights are on in this mahfuggah, haha. I love it.

Scarface Releasing His First Ever Mixtape

Uncle Brad plans on dropping his first mixtape, Dopeman Music, sometime this Spring. I'm always weary of that "mixtape" word because that whole game is saturated and most of the music on them are very disposable. But, I'm trusting that 'Face will be putting quality music out, not just stuff he don't feel is good enough for an album.

Logorama

Saw this over at Illroots:

This is a short film that was directed by the French animation collective H5, François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy + Ludovic Houplain. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2009. It opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won a 2010 academy award under the category of animated short.

Basically, its a short story that features pretty much every logo imaginable. I went into it thinking it was gonna be something like Toy Story or Finding Nemo, wrong. The piece was darker than what I thought it would be. We all grown, but yeah...don't watch this with the kids.

Josh Smith's Buzzer Beating Dunk Against the Orlando Magic

Man...this is getting to be familiar isn't it? This is like the third time this week something like this has happened. This is why Phillips Arena is called the Highlight Factory!

Stanza-"One Way Ticket" prod. by DJ Toomp

Actually got my hands on this track yesterday but didn't get around to posting it. Its a new one from the homie Stanza. There's not many other cats out there that's about to express the thoughts of the thinking everyday man like this dude. Check it out and say what you think.

Some Grind Time Rap Gang footage fresh from SXSW captured by Mo'Fam.

Meth, Ghost and Rae-"Our Dreams"

Even though I haven't really liked any of the other leaks I've heard from the Wu-Massacre album, I really do like this song right here. So much that I do plan on buying the album on March 30, perhaps all three of the covers. The video for this song though? Eh...

What do ya'll think? I mean, I understand its supposed to be inspired by the movie Se7en and yeah it gets A for effort, but, it doesn't really fit with anything the song is saying. I think they should've shot something similar to "Camay."

Wil May-"Got To Move"

photo taken by Maurice Garland on November 27th at King Plow Arts Center in Atlanta, GA

Wil May-"Got To Move"

This is a new joint from the homie Wil May. I finally got around to checking this out after hella tweets!

Some of you may have heard of him, some of you may not have. Pretty much, Wil is from Michigan, but went to school in Atlanta at Emory University. He was roommates with Asher Roth's manager and alot of folks on the streets feel that the whole college boy persona Asher had when he first dropped was directly borrowed from Wil. I mean, dude did have a project set to come out called The Frathouse Is Like A Frathouse long before Asher came with "I Love College"...and he was doing press photos in the "College" sweatshirt before Asher, but yeah...water under the bridge, anybody could buy the sweat shirt from Old Navy anyway.

Wil has been doing his thing for a hot minute. Back in '07 or so he had the club scene rocking with his songs "Bitch I Get Up Early," "The Juice" and "Just The Half." Matter fact, the first time I saw him perform was the same night I ever saw Hollyweerd and GripPlyaz perform too. I say that to say he comes from the same "scene" that started popping off here 3-4 years ago, but he was one of the first out of that "scene" to move away from Atlanta for a little bit, expose his music to others and come back with some game. Which may explain why you might not have heard Wil's name mentioned as much as the others in the circle and why he has been able to secure a joint venture for his Makeshift label with Grand Hustle.

Anyways...and Wil knows this, it took a second for me to warm up to his music. Loved seeing him perform, dude always had the star factor working for him, but it was definitely for those with an acquired taste. Wasn't necessisarly music I was gonna be riding to. I even remember being a part of a Creative Loafing consortium of sorts that wrote a piece on some of the new and up coming faces in Atlanta's music scene a while back (the article ruffled a few feathers) and I had to write about dude. I ain't say nothing bad about buddy, or anyone else for that matter, but we had to do this ranking thing and dude didn't take to kindly to the rank I gave him. So much that he reached out via myspace and we had a brief talk on either myspace or in the comments section about the article.

Ever since then I opened up to his music little by little just to see what was up. Late last year when he moved back from Cali, he let me hear his Frathouse project and the shit was pretty cool from what I remembered. He was simply doing him and seemed to find a nice balance that could possibly appeal to everybody.

So, that brings us to now and his new single "Got To Move." Shit is pretty cool to me. He produced it himself as he does the rest of his music. Its going to be interesting to see what comes out of his new situation with Grand Hustle because they haven't worked with an artist like Wil before. Sure they've worked with "different" artists over the last two years, but Wil doesn't really strike me as "different" in that regard, he just different from what that label is known for and is becoming known for. Who knows, Grand Hustle may be able to achieve some Kevin Rudoplh/Jay Sean/Cash Money type success.

Vidoe Re-Cap: Converse Open Gym

The wonderful folks at Converse hosted another one of their Open Gym events at Archer Hall Recreation Center on the campus of Morehouse College this past Saturday. Here they invite hundreds of kids from the Metro Atlanta area to come out and hoop. I'm all for anything that keeps the youngsters active, in-shape, off the couch and out of trouble. Especially since gyms and courts are disappearing in the community.

They invited kids from ages 11-18 years old to come and play and I have to say a few of these kids were pretty good. You can tell they watch alot of EPSN and might have seen an And 1 game before they saw an NBA game, but it was still great to watch. The above video has Converse athlete and Atlanta Hawk Mo Evans speaking on the program. The next Open Gym is on Saturday, April 10 at Georgia Tech. If you have a kid in mind that you want to have signed up, the complete schedule is at www.converse.com/opengym.

Antione Walker On ESPN's Outside the Lines

Antione Walker has become the poster child for athletes blowing through millions. This video interview almost makes you feel bad for the guy. But not all the way, because damn...making $100 Million dollars (actually $50 million after Uncle Sam) is hard to come by, you have to live below your means. When I used to cover the Hawks, I got a chance to talk to dude a few times when he was playing for us. Like the story said, he was a very generous dude, he was pretty cool for the most part. That's why I kinda feel for dude. Oh yeah, peep how this story pretty much says that hanging around Michael Jordan is what got him in the spot he's in now. Hope MJ don't gamble the Bobcats away...

Joe Johnson Buzzer Beater vs Bobcats

Loving it...hate I can't find any youtubage of new Bobcats owner Michael Jordan shaking his head in disgust. Consider it a little revenge for the robbery that was the 1988 Slam Dunk Contest and the asswhuppings he handed us in the playoffs in the late 90s.

Random Jam: Rufus and Chaka Khan-"Do You Love What You Feel" (1979)

Chaka Khan was fine as hell back in the day. This song just popped in my head. Never knew there was a video for this. Kinda looks like some of the viral videos that are made today.

CyHi Da Prynce-"Popular Demand" video

I'm usually not too keen on cats shooting videos for beat jacks but I had to share this one since Prynce is a favorite around these parts, plus he shot it in front of my old high school, the illustrious Redan High School.

warrenJae-"All Got" (video)

The homie double R don't like to call himself "exclusive" anymore, but he the only dude I know with this joint. He just shot me over this new track from warrenJae and its pretty jamming. Video is straight and to the point, think iPod commerical, but able to see the face.

Yes, this is the same guy that made these two jamming ass songs.

You can check out his latest project What Dreams May Come (Soundtrack) HERE

Da Mystery of Chessboxing

Completely random, but I had to share this after I saw it this morning. It'll only be right if they at least invite some of the Wu-Tang to perform.

A.Leon Craft feat. Playboy Tre-"Back to the D.E.C."

A.Leon Craft feat. Playboy Tre-"Back to the D.E.C."

Hell yeah. This just made my day. Eastside Hoe! The songs samples that old Johnny Gill and Stacy Lattisaw "Where Do We Go" (which Mike Roberts used to play THEESHIT out of on V103 back in the day) and its jamming. I'm also happy to hear A.Leon shout out all the streets and neighborhoods as well as the Backwudz/Labratz just to let ya'll know its still a family affair.

One time for Kizzy Rock, Ghetto Mafia, Youngbloodz, Baby D, Mr. Ku (Scottdale), Adamshame (Scottdale), B.o.B, Noah and all the other MC's from Decatur who to this day still don't get their props for contributing to Atlanta's rap legacy.

This comes from A.Leon Craft's solo project with SMKA The Prologue Part 1. Which is also available for DOWNLOAD HERE.

Bonus Decatur classics after the jump...

Ghetto Mafia-"In Decatur"

Young Noah-"Decatur 2U"

Baby D-"Eastside vs Westside"

Adamshame-"Get It"

Youngbloodz-"Shake Em Off"

DJ Kizzy Rock-"Yeah Shawty Yeah"

I couldn't find a youtube of Mr. Ku "Born Threat"...sorry. Might have to make one myself later on. Oh yeah, gotta throw up the old Backwudz too, seeing as how A.Leon was in the group.

Devin the Dude-"What I Be On"

Wow. A Devin the Dude video...correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first video he's had since..."Lacville '79" and "I Hi"? Dang...that's what...8 years since Devin's had a real music video? (I don't count "I Can't Wait").

Anyways, that shows you the value of having a fanbase that really supports you. There's cats out here with a gazillion videos floating around that no one really cares about like that.

This video is silly as hell by the way. Devin should really have more visuals out there. Suite 420 in stores on 4/20 and according to OnSmash its going to be on iTunes tomorrow.

Ebenezer Pastor Takes AIDS Test In Chuch [video]

Just spotted this over at STFA.

This not only is a very commendable act, but its a great example that other Black churches should follow to prove they are not dead and still serve a purpose in the community outside of being a marketplace and fashion show (sorry, brief rant).

Rev. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor of the church that the honorable Dr. Martin Luther King once preached his ministry of non-violence, says shame is part of what’s stopping people from being tested, and that the faith community must work together to change that.

"I’m very convinced that if Martin Luther King, Jr. was alive today, he would be very focused on the issue of H.I.V. & AIDs. We’ve got to fight the unholy trinity of slience, shame and stigma."

Warnock took the test as part of the National Week of Prayer for Healing of AIDS. He stepped away from the pulpit, sat down and took a rapid oral fluid test called OraSure in front of the full congregation.

Twenty minutes later, he announced that the results were negative.

Warnock challenged other clergy to follow his lead, and after the service Ebenezer provided free and confidential tests to church members. I commend him for taking the first step in breaking the silence within the faith community.

SFTA

I went to Ebenezer for the first time last month. Granted, it was my first time going, but I still go the sense that Pastor Warnock was really down for his people. Instead of opening the service hawking books and DVDs, he encouraged the congregation to donate food and clothes to the homeless people outside, within walking distance of the church. It also felt different being there because Ebenezer was right smack dab in the middle of the city and you actually felt like, you was in the community. I don't know, it just felt different being there. Shood, even the choir was on point. The way they was singing, I thought Harriet Tubman was about to run across the pulpit.

But yeah, all jokes aside, I commend Pastor Warnock on this bold move. Hopefully it will ruffle some feathers and spark some action, because its most definitely needed.

NOTE: Know that actual blood testing is still more accurate than saliva testing.

The Spook Who Sat By The Door (Full Length Movie)

I don't know who uploaded this movie to the web, but I thank them for it.

The Spook Who Sat By The Door is easily one of my favorite films. Its about a guy named Dan Freeman, who joins this program the CIA has started to increase "diversity" as they like to say now. He is selected out a group of Black males that will serve as the agency's token Black. After he learns all of the CIA's secrets and practices, he leaves the agency, returns to his home on the south side of Chicago and teaches all of the youngsters on the street, including the drug dealers and the gang members, all that he has learned, training them to be Freedom Fighters. That's all I want to reveal now, I want you to watch the movie...

What's even more interesting about the movie is its backstory. Its based off of Sam Greenlee's 1969 novel of the same name (Greenlee also directed the movie). The movie hit theatres in 1973, right in the middle of the Blaxploitation era. To seduce the public into going to see the movie, the trailers only showed explosions and "jive turkey" talking, concealing the real plot of the movie. When the movie came out, it scared the hell out of people, alarmed the government and wound up being removed and banned from theatres after just two weeks of showing.

Greenlee and all of the actors in the movie (except for Paula Kelly) were esentially black balled from Hollywood after this movie came out. The movie itself pretty much disappeared as well. But then in 2004 Tim Reid and Robert Townsend got in contact with Greenlee and obtained the rights to the movie and put it out on DVD.

I happened to be in Washington D.C. at the 2004 Congressional Black Caucus where the three of them made this announcement. They also showed the film there. It was interesting to see the mixed reaction the movie got. Of course, since I'm around all Black folks, I thought that everybody would jump up and applaud. Instead, alot of them were actually upset by the movie, saying things like "this movie solves nothing," "this movie makes us look bad." The reaction wasn't so surprising when I realized that I was in room full of corporate Americans and "Black leaders" who capitalize off keeping other Blacks uneducated and uninformed.

Greenlee peeped this too and proceeded to cuss all of them out. I got a chance to chop it up with Mr. Greenlee afterwards and he was cool as hell. I told him I loved the movie and that my aunt had read me some of the book when I was little. The DVD deal had just got completed, but it wasn't in stores yet. He said he had the movie dubbed on VHS and would sell it to me for $15, on the spot. Of course I copped it. He said I was now 1 of no more than 4 people to have the movie at the time.

I kept in contact with Mr. Greenlee for a little bit, but wound up falling out of contact with him over the years. I ran into him again in Atlanta when Rolling Out hosted an event with him.

But yeah, when you some freetime on your hands, check out this movie. Everybody that I've told about the movie gets anxious to see it, and everybody that I told about to movie that actually checked out said they dug it. Alot of things have changed since then, but alot of things have stayed the same only now its not as blatant. Oh yeah, its still for sale too.

Random Jam: Do Or Die-"Smoke and Ride"

I still remember the first time I even heard of Do Or Die. It was in '96, Greg Street played "Po Pimp" on V103 and I became a fan right then and there. Of course I bought the album as soon it dropped and it was nothing short of fie. I was still in high school and had absolutely no idea or plans or even ambitions to be in the music industry at all, but when I heard "Smoke and Ride" I just knew they had to release this their second single...and they did. Hell, this might've been one of the main songs that drove me to trying weed for the first time...this shit just made you feel so cool. But yeah, don't want to talk too much, just enjoy the song and think back to when you heard this for the first time.

INBOXication: Davinci

I know its been a while since I've done an INBOXication, sorry. But I'm sure you won't mind the layoff after you take a listen to this cat Davinci I'm going to be talking about.

Not to long ago I was talking with an associate about the stuff I choose to post on my blog. They figured since I don't post certain "street" artist that I must not like "street" music. I had to call bullshit.

For some reason over the last few years "street" music has become known as this hybrid of niggas who really can't rap, don't bother trying to flow, hardly exercise their vocabulary, rarely offer any social commentary...and do it all over generic strip club beats that are somehow radio friendly at the same time.

I grew up listening to NWA, Dayton Family, Geto Boys, Top Authority, UGK, Suave House, 8Ball & MJG and currently bump stuff like Z-Ro, The Product, and Freddie GIbbs. So what these folks consider "street" music now, I just don't get it. *stepping off soapbox*

Anyways, I was at CocaineBlunts today and came across this cat from San Francisco named Davinci. Seeing as how I try to stay abreast of everything that comes out, and have been doing so for years, I want to say that I've heard of dude before. Maybe it was from some of the interviews I've done or read with San Quinn over the last few years where he might have been named dropped. Or shit, maybe somebody from his team might've emailed me in the past and I just slept. But for right now, I really can't say that I have heard of dude. But I'm glad to say I know who he is now.

His video for "What You Finna Do" should remind you of some of your favorite reality rap, its black & white and straight to the point. It brings you into his world, but doesn't he doesn't come off as some rapper tour guide trying to show how hard he is because of his environment. This of course prompted me to investigate and find some of his music online.

Luckily, he has his entire debut album The Day The Turf Stood Still was available for free on his website. And just like Radiohead and Saul Williams before him, its also available for sale on iTunes...I encourage you to check this out and pay for it because its definitely worth the money. I mean, this is a real album with quality raps, production and all around effort, which is hard to find in a time where throwing out random mixtapes seems to be the way to go, support off that alone if not anything else.

The entire project was produced by production team Drums and Ammo, meaning that The Day The Turf Stood Still does just that, stands still and lets you enjoy it instead of getting too many producers on it trying to shine and taking the project all over the place. They kept all of the production either hard or on some soulful pimp shit as you should expect from a rapper coming from Fillmore or "Fillmoe" as its properly pronounced. Matter fact, let me try to sum things up in saying, if you listened to The Product and fuck with Willie Hen...Davinci is kinda like Willie Hen, a little slicker with the actual wordplay and with better beats. NO I'm not saying that Davinci is better than Willie or that Willie is not as good. I'm just saying Davinci's flow is a tad bit more "lyrical" when it comes to the metaphors and what not, make sense?

"The Day The Turf Stood Still"

"Real Niggaz" (Somebody)

"All I Have"

Like I said earlier...I can't consider you street if you can't analyze and break down why things are. Anybody can get on a record and RAP about selling drugs and shooting pistols. It takes talent to paint the picture and politics that revolve around those things.

"Aristocrat"

Of course there's nothing under the sun that hasn't been rapped about already, but that doesn't mean you can't find new ways to rap about things.

"Ben"

But yeah, that's all I'm going to post, I don't wanna put the man whole album up. If any of this caught your ears, you can go to Davinci's website and listen to the whole album...then decide if you want to download or purchase it.

The Day The Turf Stood Still sounds great on my laptop through my headphones...but I'm about to put it to the test in the ride as I smoke a Black...I don't expect for it to let me down there either.

U-N-I feat. Miguel-"Lately"

Can't sit here and act like I'm all the way up on these cats like that. But I am fully aware that they put out some pretty good music. Got a chance to peep them at A3C last year and was thoroughly entertained. Here's a new video from their A Love Supreme 2.0 project that is currently available at iTunes or somewhere on the internet if you can find it.

I'd like to hear some DJs throw this on their mixtapes or give this a spin in the club sometime.

Spy Phones Everywhere!

I try not to post WSHH videos here, but I had to share this one with ya'll. This is crazy. I'm mean, I always thought that these phones and all their apps were nothing but tracking devices, but hell, I guess this ABC News report makes it official. Meaning pretty much...we already stuck shawty.

New Videos From Rappers From Atlanta Named Bobby

Bobby Creekwater-"Exhibit B.C." (directed by Visual Vinyl)

This video is pretty fie. Fray always been dope with the videos and he seems to work very well with Bobby Creek. I especially like the way they worked the Jordan passing to Kukoc footage when Bobby rhymed "if I ain't Jordan, then I'm on the team...Kukoc." Perfect video for the thinking man who spends way too much time looking at videos on the internet (*raises hand*)

B.o.B aka Bobby Ray feat. Bruno Mars-"Nothing On You"

This video kinda reminds me of Spree Wilson's "Word" video for some reason. It just has a happy spirit to it. This really made me smile. I'm glad to see them really put some effort into making sure this song got the proper visuals, anything short of innovated would've been a failure. I met the guy who directed this video last week...can't remember his name, sorry guy. (UPDATE: his name is Ethan Lader)

T.I.-"I'm Back"

I mean...song cool. Beat sound generic...another one of those Drumma Boy knock-offs. I'm just glad to hear T.I. back rapping, hopefully some player bones will get re-born in the bodies of some of these clowns running round rapping, claiming gangs and shooting up Walter's and shit. Oh yeah, he does speak on the state of things that have gone on since he's been away and I'm happy to hear him do that. He also goes at somebody for "not holding it down." Not sure who that's supposed to be directed at since he's made up with everybody he's had problems with.

But over all, the beat don't really make this song the event its supposed to be. Instead of "I'm Back"...this sounds more like "ay, I'm outside...come downstairs."

www.MAURICEGARLAND.com Interviews The Co-Creators of Freaknik: The Musical

I recently interviewed the guys behind The Freaknik cartoon that came on last night on Adult Swim. I did the interview for Ozone Magazine's Sex Issue.

Now before I even saw the cartoon, I was already feeling a certain way about it. When I saw the trailer a few months ago, I was like....uh, what the hell?!? Then when I interview Nick and Carl (who co-produces The Boondocks), I was even more perplexed.

I mean, we can all sit here and act like Freaknik was this great positive event where everything was honky dory. Did it bring light to HBCU's, yes. Did it create economic stimulation for Black business, or businesses period in Atlanta, hell yeah. Was it absolutely fun...nigga what?!?

But, at the end of the day, due largely to the media and to ignorant folks period, Freaknik was painted as a wild ass event where folks was just going crazy. Which it was too.

I was fortunate enough to be coming of age in this era of Atlanta, so I saw everything. The good and the bad. But when you hear about a company like Cartoon Network/Adult Swim making a cartoon about it, the first thing that comes to mind is "oh no, please don't make us look bad."

The gentlemen who created the cartoon, of course explained their intentions for Freaknik: The Musical like true professionals, and even made some valid points. I'm sitting here still trying to figure out if I was offended or entertained by the cartoon. Especially since I know the origins of the cartoon.

If you remember, David Banner was supposed to have a cartoon on Adult Swim called The Crook'd Sip. I interviewed him about it in a feature on rappers having cartoon I did for XXL a while back. At the time the cartoon was supposed to be about race and politics. But, somewhere along the way, that vision was derailed, Banner separated himself from the project...and Freaknik was born.

That said, I'm inviting you to read the interview over at OZONEMAG.com where the co-creators of the cartoon talk in a little more detail about it. If you missed it, you can see the entire thing over at RAPRADAR.com.

Stat Quo-"Success" (Back To You) video

First time I met Stat Quo was back in 2000, maybe 2001. It was when I was program director for my college radio station, WFVS 100.5 FM. I got a CD in the mail from an artist named Stat Quo and the song was called "Hey Shawty." I liked it, so I called the number on the CD (his mom was his manager at the time...and she was a beast) and invited him to perform at this thing we used to do called "Jammin in the Cafe" where we'd have artist come down every Thursday and perform in our cafeteria during dinner time.

He came down and really did his thing. I did a brief interview with him and he said he had just got out of the University of Florida and that he was probably about to sign to Def Jam South...

I think everybody pretty much knows dude's story from there. Seeing this video and hearing that its going to be coming from his much delayed album Statlanta is good news. Dude deserves all the success he's had and looking forward to because he's definitely put in alot of work. But I have to ask though...why didn't he just name one of the other numerous projects he's released over the last 2 years Statlanta...would ya'll have noticed?

Official Motion Family SMKA Vol 2 Release Party Video

This was by far one of the crunkest events I've ever been to. Absolutely awesome. Hate to sound cliche, but Hip Hop was definitely in the building. If you consider yourself a tastemaker, influencer, shot caller or hell just a music lover period...and CHOSE not to be here...you really missed out.

The video features performances from Pill, Yelawolf, Aleon Craft, Gripplyaz & Young Scolla.

Outkast – "Spottieottiedopaliscious" (Carl Mo Remix)

Outkast-"Spottieottiedopaliscious" (Carl Mo Remix)

BLVDST just posted this up...man. This reminds me of riding into the city, listening to the radio, headed to the Nike Pavillion. Used to love how DJs would take songs and put some bootyshake up under it man. Damn...damn...damn...

Man...im yeekin' and ticking in my seat right now listening to this.

A.Leon Craft - "The Way You Do The Things You Do"

A.Leon Craft-"The Way You Do The Things You Do" (prod by 808 Blake of SMKA)

A.Leon Craft remaking a "Smokey" Robinson song is almost too appropriate. Music purist can relax...he didn't get on here rapping about weed, guns, bitches and hoes. He just re-did the song and added a little bit of him to it.

Props SMKA
