Nesby Phips-B Side

The homie Nesby Phips just dropped his latest project entitled B Side. He invited me over the crib last month to hear the unfinished version of it over a six pack and a Black. Sounded good on the computer speakers so it should sound even better finished and in the car. Matter of fact, Phips told me he was going to master it on an actual cassette so that it can sound like it has that old tape hiss on it. I haven't listened yet, so I don't know if he did it or now.

When he performed some of these joints at the Big K.R.I.T. show a couple weeks ago, people seemed to really mess with them...so check it out for yourself. Hope you enjoy.

Nesby Phips-"Word To These Bo Jacksons"

"Is it Deja Vu? Or is that everything I say, I do?"

Nesby Phips-"Word To These Bo Jacksons"

New music from the homie Nesby Phips. He let me hear what he's been working on lately and it sounded pretty cool. I don't think this was one of the song he let me hear. He's been up in NYC a lot lately with Curren$y and taking full advantage of the facilities up at Dame Dash's spot.

Wiz Khalifa feat. Nesby Phips-"Supply"

Showing love to my birthplace and the homie at the same time with this one. Pittsburgh's Wiz Khalifa dropped his highly-anticipated mixtape Kush & OJ today. I haven't been able to get all the way into buddy music like that yet, but after checking out his show at the Loft last week I think I'ma open up to it some more.

The other reason I'm posting this is because the homie Nesby Phips has an appearance on here as producer and MC.

Oh yeah, for you history buffs out there...Wiz borrows the hook from Ghostface's "Daytona 500" and the cover from David Ruffin's Gentleman Ruffin. One of other favorite rappers right now Killa Kyleon appears on the mixtape too and that shit is jammin as well.

If you want to peep the rest of the mixtape click the link below.

But I'm especially glad to post this because my dude Nesby Phips produced it and makes an appearance on the track and in the video. I'm telling ya now...dude is jamming. I suggest ya'll go back and research. Dude is going to be a problem. .He also produced that "Molatov Cocktail" on Curren$y's "Where Is Smokey Robinson" tape

Devin the Dude at Apache Cafe Re-Cap and Photos

HOT AS HELL! Those are pretty much the only words that can describe what it was like sitting inside the Apache Cafe last Friday. I go to the sauna at my gym from time to time and I'm telling you, it had absolutely nothing on the temperature at this show...Man, sitting here trying to talk about it is making me sweat all over again, so I'll stop. But yeah, my folks Shameless Plug are two for two so far with bringing dope acts to Atlanta (they brought down Drake last month for the now infamous Atlanta show that sold out in 5 hours). Devin hasn't been to Atlanta since 2006 and he was long overdue for a performance. Everything about this night (except the heat) was cool as hell.

My man producer/rapperNesby Phips did his thing as the opener and made more than a few new fans this night. If you haven't given his last project The Phipstape a listen, I suggest that you do.

Unlike some openers that will remain nameless for right now, Phips didn't go on stage acting like the crowd owed him anything. He simply went on stage did his music and won the fans over one by one. So much that no one minded when he brought both his brother and another cat on stage to do a few songs. If you want an idea of hos his stuff sounds...think a cat coming straight from the N.O. with a infatuation for both rare samples and MPC's.

Phips & Co. were actually on stage for a good little minute, but like I said, the music was good enough and he was cool enough that he was able to do it with no resistance.

But yeah, if you're on the blogosphere alot you've probably heard some of Phip's work and didn't realize it. He produced Curren$y's "On Top of the Money" as well as some material on Young Money artist Mack Maine's last mixtape.

The Jaspects followed and if you visit this blog often, you already know these guys are great. But shied, I've taken so many pictures of these dudes at shows that I figured I give my camera a little rest during their set. I did catch a little Flip cam footage of them doing their popular rendition of Gnarles Barkley's "Crazy."

After Jaspect wrapped up, the lights went low for a few minutes, and then...the dude came out.

Of course he came out smoking literally and figuratively. Like Jacinta Howard pointed out, Devin has amazing breath control to be such a heavy smoker and be able to rap non-stop the way he does. But, weed actually opens up the lungs right? One of ya'll weed experts help me out with that one.

Anyways, Devin has a deep catalog, well at least to me and people who been on his music for a decade-plus. But, he managed to do all the right songs eventhough you knew he prolly didn't do your other favorite song.

Devin performing "Lacville '79"

The night was fun as hell. Devin even hung out after the show and signed autographs and actually chilled with the people outside.

I hate that my camera went out just as he and KB were going into "Show 'Em" because that shit there was entertaining as hell. Anyways, I took some pics the rest of the night. I ain't trying to brag, but I'm kinda proud of these. Let me know what ya'll think.

Thanks for visiting.

Peep the rest of the photos in the galleries. Feel free to borrow, just shout me out brah.

Sneaker Pimps Re-Cap and Photos

This past Friday I fell through the Sneaker Pimp show at The Tabernacle. I learned something about myself going there.

I learned that I'm not a "sneaker head" like that. Granted I have a closet full of sneakers and could probably go nearly a month without wearing the same pair twice if I wanted to and I try my best to get sneaks that no one else has. But, compared some of these cats I saw at this show, I am no sneaker head.

I'm not going to camp out for Jordans or Yeezys. I don't imagine myself dropping hundreds on one pair (though I will do that for some fresh Kenneth Coles, Bostonians, etc.). I'm just a dude that likes sneakers, alot. No disrespect to the heads out there because I know a lot and shied, I'm always looking at either TheShoeGame or StandardATL to see whats good. Hell, if Eastbay was still relevant I'd probably still keep a subscription. Like my dude Nesby Phips said, Eastbay was like sneaker porn, fellas, ya'll know what I'm talking about. But, I guess the best way to get my point across is to say, like...

I workout often and I take care of myself. Would I call myself an "athlete"? No. I'm just a guy who is in good shape. Make sense? Yeah? No? Ok.

But overall the show was cool. Its always nice to hangout anywhere drinks and good music can be found. The show is pretty much a gathering for sneaker heads to show off their shoes and enjoy some sneaker-based art displays. Imagine Foot Locker meets the museum.

The show also featured some performances from Prynce, R.City (Rock City) and Big Boi. The homie Amir Shaw was out selling his book 23 as well. But before I get to that, I have to tell you about what was probably one of the more memorable moments of the show.

Now, if you've never been to a sneaker head show, it goes like this. If you walk in there with some fakes, you're going to get noticed. Hell you might get noticed more than the person with the freshest, loudest shoes on. When I say fake, I don't mean as in those XJ9000's, Pro Wings or Hoop It Up's folks used to wear when we was in 8th grade. I'm talking about shoes that look real, but are fake.

When you are spotted, you get called out and brought on stage.

From there they ask for your shoe, hold it to the crowd and explain why its fake. In this case, the culprit was rocking a pair of green see-thru AF1s. Apparently, they only came in red for girls, and blue for guys. Green was not an official colorway.

Very embarrassing. But, the thing is, after the embarrassment, 99% of the time, their going to give you a new pair to go home with so that you won't be walking around with fake sneakers on.

Well, the unsuspecting sole (ha, get it?) who got called out wasn't aware of this. So when Sneaker Pimp co-hosts Dave Jeff and DJ Clark Kent proceeded to set his shoe on fire...

Dude got mad and kinda bucked on them...

I ain't gonna lie. Not that I would walk around wearing fake sneakers, but if I didn't know any better and happened to actually pay to go to a sneaker event and some dudes I didn't know started setting my shoe on fire? The shoe I walked in wearing and had to wear when I leave and go home? Yeah, I woulda bucked too.

Anyways, they gave him his burnt up shoe back and escorted him off the stage. In hindsight though, dude might have deserved that, solely off of the dumb answer he gave when they asked where he got them from. He said he got it from his "drug dealer." GTFOH man.

Anyways, fake sneaker guy was forgotten about quickly as Big Boi took the stage and rocked!

Now, I've seen Big Boi perform numerous times since Dre 3000 decided to fall back from rapping. He's always done his thing. But on this night, it just seemed better than usual. He rocked so hard that it actually made you mad at Dre. Like, dude where the f*ck are you? Especially when you're accustomed to hearing Outkast songs in their entirety, not just with Big's verses on there.

But yeah, that's pretty much it. Shouts out to the homie Sean Falyon for looking out with his extra ticket. I was prepared to support and buy a ticket, but that extra change they tacked on at the door? Whew. Wasn't gonna be able to do that. Preciate it homie.

Corey Davis Art Show @ City of Ink

Last Friday I stopped by the City of Ink to check out artist Corey Davis' latest exhibition: The Good, The Bad and the Exceptionally Beautiful. That was a pretty accurate description of the crowd that came out to show support.

As usual the show was pretty cool. City of Ink art shows are one of the main attractions that I look forward to in the city. The art is always dope, the DJ always gets off and the drinks stay flowing for the lowesky. I think the main thing I like about is just the synergy of people that it brings. I always manage to make a new friend or associate at these shows even though I usually know half of the folks in there already. If you haven't been to a COI show yet, don't make a habit of missing anymore of them. Truly a treat.

As for Corey's art, very unique stuff. Dead serious, that's the only word I can think of right now to describe it, I'm not trying to be funny. Reminds me of anime stuff but he attacks alot of pop culture, history and religious concepts with his pieces. Dope stuff. Buy some for the crib.

I took some pics that I'd like to share with ya'll:

Nesby Phips and Lyo
If you haven't peeped Nesby's new project The Phipstape, please do so now. Its dope, to me at least.

Fabian (Occasional Superstar) and Mr. Soul (Visual Soul)
Two of the dopest artists in the city right here. They told me they plan on having a battle in the near future and I am really looking forward to that. Expect an interview with Mr. Soul on the site very soon. You have some of his art in your possession and probably don't even realize it.

DJ Wreckineyez and Tuki
Wreckineyez did his damn thing this night. I mean he went from playing Killer Mike's "2 Sides" to Ghostface's "Daytona 500" like it wasn't nothing. He's currently doing his thing as Asher Roth's tour DJ. Tuki is co-onwer of City of Ink (along with Miya Bailey) and a member of Hollyweerd who also...

...swears I didn't take any pictures of him on this night, hense this scene:

...but after you visit the galleries you will see that it was pretty much Tuki time all night.

So with that, please visit the galleries to see the rest of the pics. Peace.

Turn On the Radio!!! Pt. 1

This weekend my dude Jabari Graham of Art, Beats & Lyrics invited me to join him on the radio at WRFG 89.3 on DJ Jayforce' Beats & Lyrics show this last Saturday to speak on.....Hip Hop. It was me, him and the homies Bem Joiner, Dubelyoo, Ricardo Spicer of Sweatbox Productions, Nesby Phips, Ian Ford, Fray of Visual Vinyl (thanks for handling the camera) and a gang of other folks in the studio. As you can see from the video and couple more I'm about to post, folks was deep up in that camp. I mean, Akil from Jurassic 5 was even up in there for a little bit.

I actually wish I could share with yall the time/talk me and the guys had before we went up to the radio station. But um...I'm not gonna be posting alot of personal life shit on the web quite yet. This ain't the Truman Show.

Anyways, I'm going to be posting videos of this night as they upload. I didn't know it took so damn long to upload videos to internet.

This night in particular was sponsored by Jack Daniels, Coca-Cola and Bud Light, so...when you see speeches slur and voices raise along the way (as well as me nodding to a beat that you can't hear)...you know why.

And please...don't forget, ART, BEATS & LYRICS goes down this Friday, July 25th!!!!
